It Was As It Was

Growing up poor gave my brother and me the gift of imagination. Cardboard boxes never knew what hit them. Teddy bears were transformed into secret spies with handsome yet roguish accents, closets became spaceships that navigated to the most dangerous war zones in outer space, and grandmama’s shawl became the garb of a beautiful Russian maiden trying to evade members of a foreign intelligence. All this, and we still had time to put on puppet shows, reenact key scenes from Spiderman, fight the Nazi's and rescue children in peril.
