Little Jackie Paper's Magical Dragon

If you grew up in the seventies and eighties, you'll remember those lovely Puff the Magic Dragon cartoons based on the song of the same name. "Puff" was a mythical dragon who hailed from a land called "Honah Lee". He would go out of his way to help children having problems. One such child was little Jackie Draper/Paper, a very sad little boy. So sad in fact, that even his doctors couldn't figure out how to help him. Jackie lost interest in all that his imagination had to offer. Sounds like childhood depression doesn't it? Hands up again, for me. Luckily for Jackie Draper/Paper, Puff came to the rescue with a bit of magic, a journey and of course, imagination. Remember these lyrics?:

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.

The song had a hopeful yet slightly melancholic feel to it, very much like childhood. Despite protests to the contrary by the song's author, many have suggested that the song is an allusion to marijuana use. Perhaps there's some truth to it. For sad little children it was quite the drug indeed.
