The 20 Minute Workout

Leg warmers, high-cut aerobic tights, extreme close-ups of fit lasses, and oh yes twenty minutes of heart-pumping, sweat-inducing cardio. Does this ring a bell? Does it take you back to the 1980s, well for twenty minutes at least? The 20 Minute Workout was a phenomenon in the 80s and I along with countless others, pulled up my leg warmers and joined in.

At a time before stick thin models and idiot heiresses dominated the airways, I struggled with weight. I was just a kid but any new fad that promised to whip souls with excessive flesh into shape, I wholeheartedly embraced (attempted), results notwithstanding. It's interesting that a show with a huge following of pervy gawkers and fitness freaks could also be revered by children as well. I guess we all had our own reasons for watching.

For my part, Bess Motta, the curly, black-haired, southern lass (or so I presumed) was my favorite 20 Minute gal. I found her to be the most motivating. She would often even break into song while leading the workout while others of us struggled to maintain our breath. Bess was far better than that squeaky and nasally voiced gal, who enticed me on several occasions to throw things at the screen.

This post was inspired by a recent discussion I came across on Diana Prince's Bulletproof Bracelets while I was coincidentally in the midst of researching yet another workout program that was also popular during the 80s: The Body Works. "The Body Works" had more of a following here in southern Ontario and one that I'm sure all school children were forced to watch back then, at one time or another. That's a post for another day though (coming soon). One workout at a time now.

  2. I totally agree. I mean how many close ups of their butts (and their what nots) did we need to lose weight?
