Old Friends

As I am strolling down the garden path,
I saw a flower glowing in the dark.
It looked so pretty and it was unique;
I had to bend down just to have a peek.

Hello old friend,
Its really good to see you once again.
Hello old friend,
Its really good to see you once again.
("Hello Old Friend"/Eric Clapton)

I fondly remember those late May walks home from school: echoes of back-breaking laughter, year-end gossip, running and skipping through walkways, anticipating the delights of two months of freedom (nearly within reach), and mad dashes through neighbourhood sprinklers while corner store freezies hung with vice-grip like precision from the edges of thirsty mouths. The crowning glory of these treks (apart from the walking away from school bit) were the rows of Cherry Blossoms that greeted us, as we made our way home. It often felt as if they knew we were coming and needed their comfort. No matter how horrible a day at school was, the sight of those fragrant trees exploding with pink and white flowers, swaying with the wind, was something to behold.

Old friends.
