A Daily Ritual

It all sounds too good to be true.

During the weeks leading up to Christmas, a daily ritual: beautifully illustrated festive calendars with toys, trinkets or bits of chocolate hidden behind 24 tiny windows—all for the taking. Popping open those windows was a thing of joy. As if a kid needed extra cause to revel in the moment on a December day. The delights of anticipation are taken to a whole new level at Christmastime. My parents used to buy advent calendars similar to those pictured below. The designs haven't changed much since I was a kid, granted some are fancier now indeed. My brother and I were always given calendars filled with Santa-shaped chocolate. Happy times.

  1. Hey, I remember doing this when I was little... each day I'd open up a little window in the cardboard calendar, and there would be a piece of chocolate for each day... all up until Christmas. :)))

    1. It was lots of fun wasn't it? I still buy them during the holidays—its still chocolate after all. :)
